Year to year changes:
1999: The Golf has been completely redesigned; it now has slightly larger dimensions and a number of new features.
2000: Having just redesigned the Golf last year, Volkswagen has made only minor feature upgrades to the 2000 Golf.
2001: The Golf GLS 1.8T is available with an optional sports suspension. The GL trims receive an updated cloth fabric, and the GLS trims get new velour fabric. Volkswagen’s Side Curtain Protection airbag system becomes available midway through the model year.
2002: The Volkswagen Golf goes into the 2002 model year with new warranties: a basic warranty of 4 years/50,000 miles and 24-hour roadside service.
2003: New standard equipment includes front power windows with auto up/down, heated power mirrors, cruise control, and a premium sound system with CD player. A Monsoon audio system is available as a stand-alone option on the GL. The GLS has a standard sunroof, and both GL and GLS have optional ESP (Electronic Stabilization Program).
2004: The Volkswagen Golf gets an improved diesel (TDI) engine for 2004, providing more power and better fuel economy.
2005: With a new version set to debut in the U.S. for 2006, the current Golf continues unchanged for the 2005 model year.
