Design
The 2008 Cayman S Porsche Design Edition 1 is based on the Cayman S, the top-of-the-line Cayman model. Differentiating itself from the standard Cayman S models, the limited-edition model is only available with an exterior painted in gloss black. Matte black design stripes down the center of the vehicle, and commemorative logos on the sides, continue the theme. To further accent the design elements, the front lip spoiler, door handles, and side intakes have been painted black. Standard Porsche Active Suspension Management (PASM) lowers the car by 10mm, while 19-inch wheels from the 911 Turbo give the coupe an aggressive stance.

The design accents are carried to the interior with unique black leather and Alcantara upholstery, sleek instrument dials, and black-painted features. One of the most remarkable attributes of the Cayman S Porsche Design Edition 1 is the complement of Porsche Design accessories standard with each vehicle. All limited-edition models are outfitted with a black leather briefcase, pocket knife, writing pen, and keychain. Of course, a black quartz chronograph is included. All pay tribute to the original Chronograph 1 from the Porsche Design Studio.

Hardware
The 2008 Cayman S Porsche Design Edition 1 shares all mechanicals with the Cayman S, the most powerful Cayman in the lineup. The standard 3.4-liter flat-six powerplant is rated at 295 hp and 250 lb.-ft. of torque. Consumers may choose between a no-cost 6-speed manual and an optional 5-speed Tiptronic S automatic transmission, both driving the rear wheels. Suspension is independent, front and rear, with a variable ratio power-assisted steering system standard. Brakes are 4-piston monobloc aluminum calipers with vented and cross-drilled rotors on all four corners. Wheels are 19-inch aluminum, with performance-oriented tires. According to Porsche, the manual transmission Cayman S Porsche Design Edition 1 will accelerate to 60 mph in just 5.1 seconds and continue towards a top speed of 171 mph.

Safety
Like all Porsche Cayman models, the Cayman S Porsche Design Edition 1 is equipped with the latest available safety features. These include dual advanced air bags for both driver and passenger and Porsche’s Side Impact Protection system (POSIP), a comprehensive set of four additional air bags designed to protect the thorax and head of the occupants. Side-impact beams and pre-tensioning seat belts complete the package. The front passenger seat has been designed to work with any LATCH (Lower Anchors and Tethers for CHildren)-compatible child seat (the passenger-side air bags may be disabled by the Porsche dealer for this application). Anti-lock brakes and a vehicle stability system (PSM) are standard on the limited-edition model.

Technology
Porsche Active Suspension Management (PASM) is standard on all 2008 Cayman S Porsche Design Edition 1 models. This cockpit-adjustable electronic dampening suspension actively controls the dampening force on each wheel in a mater of milliseconds. The driver can choose between “Normal” and “Sport” programs to individualize the ride. The system is designed to maintain sporty driving dynamics in either setting, but special sensors and a control unit continuously adjust dampening settings to optimize the ride for improved stability, handling and comfort.
