Smart to Introduce Electric Fortwo

Soon, environmentally-conscious car shoppers will have the option of driving an electric-powered Smart Fortwo. Smart will begin leasing the electric version of its popular subcompact in select American cities later this year.

One hundred models of the electric Smart Fortwo are already operating in London.

The electric Fortwo has a clear slant towards city driving -- as CNET reveals, “the motor maxes out at 30 kilowatts, or about 40 horsepower.” The motor itself is a, “16.5 kilowatt-hour lithium ion battery pack and power management system…manufactured by Tesla Motors.”

The electric Fortwo will be able to reach the lower end of highway speeds with a top speed, according to CNET, “limited to about 65 miles per hour.” More impressive, however, is the electric Fortwo’s charging speed.

USA Today reports: “Using a standard 220-volt outlet, the electric Smart takes 3.5 hours to charge the battery from 20% to 80% of its capacity. It takes less than 8 hours to fully recharge. It also can be charged using a standard 110-volt wall outlet.” Fully charged, the electric Smart Fortwo will have a range of over 80 miles.

Unfortunately, owning an electric Fortwo will not be an option when the first 250 cars arrive in October -- as Smart is only making them available for lease. Reuters reports that the lease terms are “for four years at $599 a month, after a $2,500 payment at signing. The car will be under warranty during the full four-year period.”
