American Racing-A Company With Roots. In 1954, early drag racing innovator Romeo Palimides teamed up with J.O. Ellison, a San Francisco machine shop owner, to design and craft cutting-edge, high strength-to-weight ratio magnesium racing wheels for his dragster. Eventually they met up with forward-thinking Tom Griffith, an engineer that was ahead of his time, and the heart and soul of American Racing Equipment was born. It was the golden age of hot rodding, and street enthusiast interest in the lighter weight, higher tech wheels was overwhelming. Romeo's original vision, coupled with the leading edge designs of Tom Griffith from that small machine shop in San Francisco, evolved into the world's leading aftermarket wheel company. In 1956, American Racing Equipment, Inc. was incorporated. In those early years, American Racing produced more than thirty styles and sizes for use on the street as well as professional and amateur racing in drag racing, Formula One, Formula Jr. and Grand Tour sports car racing.
The Wheel That Started A Craze. In the early sixties, when European racing wheel companies were focused upon semi-solid modular designs, designer Tom Griffith conceived the tapered parabolic contour spoked American Racing "Torq Thrust" which reduced wheel weight and promoted brake cooling. Considered by many to be the most famous wheel of all time and honored by Hot Rod Magazine in 2005 as one of twenty automotive speed parts that changed the automobile world, the Torq Thrust started the custom wheel craze, making the conversion from strip to street. Known as "Americans", "5-spokes" or "Torq Thrusts", different design generations evolved as car crafting technology developed. Today authentic "old school" Torq Thrusts are highly collectible and sold around the world. Often imitated, never duplicated, the Torq Thrust is the signature wheel for performance and custom purists. Torq Thrusts graced the covers of two Beach Boys albums and became the signature wheel of a rock and roll generation.
General Lee's Landing Gear. American Racing wheels can be seen in some of Hollywood's most famous films including The Game, Die Hard With A Vengeance, Vanilla Skies, 2Fast 2Furious, and perhaps the most important Ford Mustang film of all time, Bullit. During the seven seasons (147 episodes & 2 made-for-TV reunion movies) of the hit television series "Dukes of Hazzard", the Warner Brothers studio built a total of 340 "General Lee" 1969 Dodge Chargers. All "General Lees" were equipped with American Racing "Vector" wheels. Of the 340 General Lees built for the series, 321 were destroyed as a result of stunt car jumps. Of the 1360 American Racing Vectors jumped and stunt driven for the series, only one wheel failed by breaking (the broken wheel is in a private collection in Sylmar, California).
The Fastest Wheels on the Planet. On May 25, 2005, the 8,000 horsepower U.S. Army NHRA Top Fuel race car of Don Schumacher Racing, piloted by Tony Schumacher, set another world record on American Racing Pro Series professional racing wheels of 336.15 MPH on a quarter mile track. Again, on October 1, 2005, Schumacher broke another world record on American Racing Pro Series wheels with a quarter mile elapsed time (E.T.) of 4.37 seconds. American Racing-the fastest wheels on the planet. Again.
Re-Inventing the Wheel. Following more than two years of development under an exclusive agreement with DuPont®, which included high speed and heat trials in NASCAR environments at Charlotte and Phoenix, American Racing introduced automotive wheels permanently coated with DuPont® Teflon® to consumers in 2003. Featuring resistance to brake dust, extreme weather conditions and ease-of-cleaning, American's Teflon® coated wheels proved to be yet another forward step in re-inventing the wheel.
American Racing Today--Wheels That Perform. Fifty years later after it all started, American Racing offers a complete line of over one hundred precision-crafted alloy wheel styles under five different brand names with the same pride, innovation and enthusiasm upon which Romeo Palamides' original vision was founded: American Racing Vintage, American Racing Pro Series, American Racing Muscle, as well as related brand lines including Twenty Inches Strong (TIS), Motegi Racing, Motto, Riax Performance Alloys, and RO_JA Motorsports. The company distributes more than 1.5 million wheels annually through state-of-the-art manufacturing facilities, company-owned, satellite-connected warehouses, an independent distributor system in the United States and through international distributors in over twenty-two countries on four continents. AR is the Official Wheel of California Speedway, Don Schumacher Racing, and Universal Studios' The Fast & the Furious.
50 Years and the Vision Continues. With American Racing's 50th Anniversary quickly approaching in 2006, AR will continue its tradition of innovation and performance. In celebration of this milestone, American Racing will release a limited-edition logo commemorating its 50-year history as a performance leader in the aftermarket wheel industry. With the 2006 Aftermarket Collection and the Pro Series Drag Racing Line, American Racing's legacy of wheel crafting continues.
